personal inflation calculator - just a gimmick?

The BBC has a news post about a new calculator for people to play with where you enter your own details and it works out your rate of inflation. I've checked the site and it's not live yet but it should be by the morning.

You can read the story herehttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6255611.stm

The calculator is available from here http://www.statistics.gov.uk/ after 7am.

So is it just a new government toy or is it a useful tool? I guess we'll see in the morning.

Looks interesting enough, but way too slow? It just crawled along in my browser at work, so perhaps not the best web-application ever coded. Didn't try any of the offline versions.

OK well it is turned on today this is the link to the online version. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pic/index.html

I think I filled it in right but I really wasn't sure what I was meant to do at the end, I looked at the graph which claimed I was better than average on inflation, but I think that is just because I quit smoking and don't drink much so most of the things they are counting it on are things where the tax goes up every year. Maybe it is different if you have a house but I still don't really get what the point of it is after the hype

  • Saw the item on the news that a pensioner had the highest rate at 8% as heating bills and council tax were rising but not the pension.
