Should that extend to protecting their children's inheritance at everyone else's expense? Of course not. There may be problems with the system as it stands, but there's essentially nothing wrong with the concept of selling houses to pay for care.
The question of "protecting my childrens inheritance" doesnt apply - as there arent any children.
In my case - my assets will all go to a charity (of my choice) - but I know I've had to work long and hard for those assets (ie my house). Therefore I see no reason why my money should be taken because its tied up in a house - when it couldnt/wouldnt be taken if I had just spent it willy-nilly.
So - personally - I will be staying in my house for the rest of my days no matter what and, if help is needed for me to remain in my home, then I will ask for it and if I CANT afford it and Society WONT afford it - then its off to the media to complain "What have I paid my taxes for all this time if not for help to stay in my own home if I need it?".0 -

Megawd - those poor brave people. I sympathise with their intention to "stay in charge" of their own lives.
May they be taken to the Light.0 -
once the government introduces the £35k cap, you will never have to lose your home. wheres the story?Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)
new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,0000 -

I can understand that couple who committed suicide, how tragic.
One of the main worries must be if ONE of you has to go into care. I know my b-i-l grieved when my sister had to go into care (Alzheimers). He had, due to her illness, seen the person he had been with since they were teenagers, disappear, and her going into care was just as if she had died. When she did eventually die a year later, whilst he was sad and upset , he had already done his major grieving.
Or if you both go into care but into different Homes, how awful that must be.
On the subject of payment,I suppose if you have the wherewithall you should pay. But sometimes the fees can be raised in other ways than selling the house, no-one 'forces' you to sell it.
Is the £35k cap definitely going to happen?(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Your money is not being taken, it is being used to care for YOU.
If you see no reason for your money to be taken, can I ask how you justify other peoples money being taken for your care, just so that you can keep your assets and pass them on to who you wish?0 -

Such a sad thing to happen especially since they were both still fit and healthy.
Must admit though I would'nt hesitate to end my life if I ever got a diagnosis for alzheimers .
I certainly could'nt/would'nt put my husband and family through having to see me to end up like that.0 -

And I see no reason why my money should be taken to pay for your care that you are perfectly capable of paying for yourself.0 -
I for one won't be happy until every poor person is lying dead in the street. Bonus points if they're old and can no longer work.0
