Games Reception

Hi all

I'm hoping some of you lovely people may be able to help.

I'm getting married August 2012 at a hotel and am looking at having a "different" reception. The whole dancing thing just doesn't appeal to me or the OH, so we are going for a casual game style reception. However I'm running out of ideas.

So far, we are doing our first "dance" on guitar hero, and this will run through the evening, giant jenga/connect 4, little puzzles and brain teasers on tables etc. Am trying to talk the OH into hiring two segway's for people to scoot around on (if the hotel will allow of course), twister, but I'm trying to include lots of different things so that everyone of all ages will have something to do and have an enjoyable and different evening.

Has anyone had a games reception? If so, what games/activities did you have? Also suggestions for things you enjoyed at the weddings of others? Thank you!

  • At my SIL2B's wedding they had a games room with board games, sing star, twister etc. They also had bouncy castles, boules, and swingball outside. It was great!!

Do you have access to multiple rooms? You could have board games in one, guitar hero in another, perhaps an xbox or playstation in a third....
If you have outside space as well then even better.
    Ideas for games:
-board games - pictionary, trivial pursuit, whatever can be found in the loft...!
    - outdoor games - swingball, boules and/or skittles, croquet, bouncy castle, or maybe even more active games like rounders, if you think your guests would be up for it!! (maybe warn people in advance so they can dress appropriately!)

    Good luck!

  • We have made some games for our wedding including splat the rat, hook the duck, hoopla. My brother has also brewed some beer so there is a name the beer game as well. I have written a quiz that is personal to us and organised a small treasure hunt. At the bands half time we will be judging the games and giving out little prizes to winners (hopefully some of the children will win!)

Maybe try and extend it into circus skills a bit - plate spinning, stilts, juggling, devil sticks - all the kinds of thing that people just pick up and play with....

How about a tightrope? Or fire poi?

Sorry, I blame Idiophreak, he's a bad influence!

  • I did remember reading from one "games" wedding they set up a quiet area and to play Chess and Othello and it went down really well.

I'd be tempted to put some drinking games dice at the bar and maybe it'd be fun to have a bit of gambling during the wedding breakfast. Something like a group bet on how long the best man's speech will be or maybe a bit of bingo with things to tick off like the Father of the Bride shedding a tear, a waiter/ress dropping a knife or a wine glass.

If you have an outdoors Giant Jenga will go down well. I'd also be tempted to do a "dance off", there was an impromptu one at my friend's wedding very late in the evening when everyone was very drunk and there was a tournament. It was her favourite part of the day!

    how about limbo?
  • Do you have an outdoor area? A friend of ours had giant connect four, badminton and croquet at their wedding. Also (a little bit cheaper for outdoors) could set up a little race track and have sack races or three legged races?
  • Bob's Box has just been on Dragon's Den. They also had the digital graffiti wall. No idea how much they cost, I suspect they won't be cheap.

This site has some more affordable ideas if you are willing to buy some games.

How about a 'school sports day' or 'it's a knockout' theme?
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • You could do a mini murder mystery? Downloadable ones are pretty good.
    Great idea!
:grin:If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you
  • Beetle Drive?
