One for the ladies - (sanitary towels question)

Options
What's the most 'natural' and least 'chemical' make of pad out there these days?

Daughter seems to be having issues with the usual 'Always' etc. She has always had sensitive skin but it seems the pads are irritating her.

Is there a make that is totally chemical free or more natural and less irritant than others?

(Not interested in tampons or moon cups etc, just have the pad question, thanks.)

Not really sure, but will be interested in any answers, my DD hasn't started yet, but she's very sensitive down below too. She always has to have cotton knicks and can't wear tights for 2 days running.

I've bought her a selection but made sure none of them are the fragranced type or ones with lock away cores.

I wonder if the more 'old fashioned' type with the thin tissuey type cover rather than this modern rubbery cover might be better? Do the basics ranges have this?

Let me know if you find anything!

  • Yes and it is a wonderful natural alternative! I HATE Always etc, they always make me feel itchy. Natracare are fantastic. In fact after reading about the hideous chemicals even in tampons I switched to theirs for that too.

I did also invest in a moon cup once but didn't get around to trying it out yet.
  • I also can't use always but can use Bodyform & Kotex but if your looking for a natural pad the best i have found is Nature Womancare but sadly no longer easy for me to buy as Waitrose stopped stocking them but Natracare are good and easier to find you can even buy them in Oxfam, You can buy both of these makes from this website http://www.spiritofnature.co.uk/Catalogue/ANATR0017/Body_and_Skincare/Natracare-Slender_Pads.aspx

Hope this is to help for your daughter and you..

I was going to order both types from here to give them a try but it's a bit of a flaky site.

Clicking on the link for the regular pads takes you to red hemp socks and the link for the winged ones takes you to boxer shorts. I also had 4 items showing in the basket on various pages, when I hadn't added anything at all.

Think I'll buy from somewhere else. :)

  • I am so glad to hear that it is not just me who gets a reaction from 'Always' pads, I thought I was imagining it!

I use Bodyform pads and have always found them to be fine.

I find Always Maxi are ok (NOT Always Ultra, which have that blue stuff inside). Also Bodyform and Kotex. Natracare I think are good but I find that they don't seem to do really absorbent pads for heavy days.

I do prefer Bodyform ones, they don't make me as itchy as Always ones do - the wings seem to irritate me.
Weird one, but how about keeping some babywipes in the bathroom for when she's on, just to see if the change to something cool and wet helps the itchyness

We do that as a rule anyway. :)

  • I use Natracare liners all the time and they are very good, I have a skin condition 'in this area':(, so I have to be extremely careful about what I use so as not to make it worse (not eczema!). My daughter (she's 13), uses Always, as she likes the extra absorbtion they offer, I have offered to get her Natracare as they are chemical free, I will keep offering to buy her them! Maybe when her flow lightens (she is just getting into a more regular pattern now), she will feel more comfortable using them. I have to get them at Waitrose or the Health Food shop in my nearest city, so a bit inconvenient supply-wise, but I just keep a spare lot in my bathroom so I always have some.
