Big Problem - Nationwide Building Society Don't Do Bankers Drafts

Re 'counter cheques' - I assume that only the building society could stop them, as they are from their account and not your own, so I can't really see the risk to the seller as the buyer cannot stop them getting their money?? Nationwide certainly offer them as being 'just like a bankers draft' - verbally at least.0

Just a thought - what bout viewing the van initially, and leaving a small deposit as a goodwill gesture before returning another day with the bulk of the money or cheque. 'The Real Hustle' showed how you could be duped by thinking you were buying from someone's house when it wasn't even theirs (extreme paranoia now)! Also - I understand it isn't very safe for the buyer to pay for ebay items or similar with a direct bank transfer / wire transfer.0

The problem is they are 75 miles away.
My error in this is failing to insist on meeting at the sellers address. Something I will not do again - lesson learnt.
I think I will just take a Buildind Society cheque, as they sound the equivilent as a Bankers Draft.0 -
Hi there,
I had exacty the same situation when I bought a car a couple of weeks ago. I had transferred money from my A&L account to Nationwide because Nationwide don't charge to do a building society cheque and A&L wated £20 to do a bankers draft!
I spoke to the girl at Nationwide and she said that their cheques were their "equivilent" to bankers drafts, but I checked with the seller beforehand and he was fine with it. Apparently, they can take a little longer to clear but that is all. I was not charged anything at the branch and the branch staff can issue them then and there (unlike A&L who wanter 5 working days notice!().
I would just check with the seller, and if any questions give Nationwide a call - I have always found their customer service to be excellent.
