Strong Ties on Seat Pads

I have some gingham cotton seat pads for the kitchen table that long ago lost their ties.... snapped off pretty rapidly, so they are on the floor more often that the chairs.
This may seem a silly question but I wan't to sew on some new ties but don't want them to a) snap b) rip the cushion or c) not do their job.
Does anyone have any ideas or advise? I originally thought ribbon but now not sure if it would be strong enough!!!

I think if you make the ties wide enough, and maybe with layers of something inside to help strength, then you could make them strong enough - but then you have the problem that the weakest point will be where the ties are stitched to the pads.
Although it may take some work to make it look pretty, how to fit it would depend on your style of chair, but I'd be tempted to try and come up with something using velcro. You could stitch something pretty to the plain sides, and if someone gets up without being careful then hopefully only the velcro would come apart rather than the material or stitches (and if it makes the noise velcro usually makes when coming apart, then the person who was a bit clumsy getting up and taking the cushion with them might be a bit more careful next time lol)0 -
Were they from Dunelm Mill by any chance? I got some there in Aug and I have never had worse ones in my life!! Snaped within DAYS!! Unfortunately I threw away the recipe, so mad with them and myself!! £24 out of the window!!
I had Royal Doulton ones before, I bought them at outlet store and those lasted 4 years before they snaped... fantastic stuff. They don't do them any more and generaly pretty ones are difficult to get hold of.
When my Royal Doulton ones snaped I tried to saw them back on, but even though I run over the same seam several times it still snaped within a week - and it was nightmare as due to going through 4 layers it wasn't easy!!
My OH's friend is a sofa maker and he has special tools so I think he is going to make us some next... I mean his sofa seams must last, so surely he will be able to think of something.. lets hope.0 -
YES!!!! They were from Dunhelm, it makes me so mad!!!!
We have just ordered a new kitchen and it means the sofa will be banished from the kitchen so comfy sets at the table are a must.
I can see that I might have to invest in some more but that is not very MSE, especially as I have been looking at ones in Laura Ash!!!! Although those don't look much stronger!0
