help with an unsecured loan that has gone to debt collectors

I have an unsecurred loan for about £10k which i have had to reduce my payments on due to be ing made redundant and then having lower paid employment than i had initially.
they have passed it on to Allied International Credit and i am now getting letters, texts and phone calls off them non stop.
I do not want to deal with them and have contacted the original lending company (NRAM) to offer a higher monthly payment figure for the foreseable future but theya re refusing to deal with me as the debt is with allied international.
firstly: do i have to deal with Allied international - they have been nothing but rude and abrupt with me to the present time
secondly: what will happen if i refuse to deal with them?
the worry is that i have equity in my house and i do not want them to say yo have to sell this or that to give us the money but i am not sure about re mortgaging as this loan is technically in default and consequentially this affects my credit rating.
i am not tryign to get out of paying the money - i just do not want to deal with this company - i have told the original company about my issues but basically they have said there is nothing they can do whilst its with this other company.
this is probably only a short term situation anyway as unfortunately my mother in law has terminal cancer and my husband has already said this is the first debt we will clear (along with another loan in our joint names) but obviously i do not want to bank on my mother in law dying to clear this iyswim adn would rather start to deal with the situation myself.
can anyone help please?

so can i just send them a letter stating that the maximum i can pay is xx figure and then ask them that all communications are done in letter format? its annoying as already today since noon i have had 4 calls despite me saying that i am at work and cannot deal with these comments until this evening0

As LL says you will need to deal with them and I'd suggest you write to them and offer a monthly payment you can afford. To stop the phone calls and texts you can send them this - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=11571485&postcount=4
If they start telling you to sell your house/ remortgage / take out another loan then this is a breach of the OFT guidelines and I would make sure you write to complain if they do start being agressive - read the guidelines here to see what is considered unfair OFT Debt Collection & letter Guidance - READ IF YOU ARE BEING HASSLED UNFAIRLYA smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Yes, you can do exactly that - you can suggest to them that you consider their repeated calls to you harrassment and will take it further if it continues.
I always think it best to maintain some dignity and keep things polite and threat free at first though.
You can send them an SOA (look on DFW board for one) andmake them an offer. Also request that they freeze interest too.
EDIT : Blimmin' Tixy getting in the way again!0
