Change of pay date

My husband has just informed me (for the 6th time this year), that the accountant has changed the date they are getting paid. He usually gets paid on the 20th of the month, they are now getting paid on the 24th. The date they get paid can vary from 2-4 days difference. They are only given 24-48 hours notice each time. This is not enough time to be able to change any standing orders or direct debits. So, we are getting hit with charges from the bank every time he does this. When he has been asked about it, the accountant says they are meant to be paid on the last working day, but as a good will gesture, he pays them early. Is he allowed to do this with hardly any notice? Are we within our rights to send him the bank charges due to his date change?

Change your direct debits and standing orders to the 2nd of the month. The money should be in then. Better still put your money for the DDs into a separate account and transfer the money straight into that so you don't touch it

We already do that with another account, but if the money hasn't been paid into his account, he can't change it over.0

Assuming that he is correct in saying that payday is the last day of the month then I cannot see that you can do anything about it. Pay is allways arriving in the account early, just some months it is earlier, and some not quite so early; but allways early.0 -
Is your husband self-employed? Do you pay the accountant? If so, could you change the accountant that you use?
If not, I would start to assume that payday was the 1st of the month and arrange all my finances around this date. You may have to pay some one off charges to change the dates for some direct debits but at least you will know where you are after that.
