I think you are supposed to take them to council waste disposal sites but I bet almost no one does.

Please, please DONT ever put them in the glass recycling, I work for a glass making company and we need cullet (recycled glass) to reduce the melting time (and keep our energy use down) If it is contaminated with mercury from these bulbs the glass we make would have to be disposed of in landfill becuase it would not be fit for food use.

Can I also say please don't put Pyrex or oven glass items in the recycling, it melts at a different temperature than ordinary glass and causes lumps in the bottles and jars we make, and once again it has to be landfilled.

I think at least some Sainsbury's branches have recycle bins for them.
