This is apparently solved by the Eneloop and equivalent cells.AMO wrote:I think what the other person was getting at is that rechargeable batteries are all very well and good if you've taken them straight out of the recharger, but if you go several days/weeks/months into areas that don't have a plug point available rechargeables are not the best choice.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
Thanks for the feedback however I just order some from ebay got 8 AA 800MA batteries for £4.50.

Robert Dyas shops were selling a pack of 20 Duracell Plus AA for £5 a few weeks ago. It might be worth checking if you have a local branch.
I strongly advise against re charging ordinary alkaline or zinc carbon batteries in a Ni-Cad or Ni-Mh charger, even a trickle charger, unless it is specifically designed for that purpose.
There is a real risk of fire and explosion, let alone the ooze risk posted above.
It is possible to buy chargers specifically designed for alkaline batteries. I bought one from Innovations (now defunct) many years ago and it works quite well although you only get a few usable recharges from each battery. It uses pulse charging and monitors the battery behaviour to avoid the fire and explosion risk.
Coopers of Stortford have one for £24.99.

They claim up to 10 recharges but take that with a generous salt portion.0 -
