My husband has been very ill (suddenly) and although is improving cannot return to work for another 2-3 weeks. He will only be entitled to ssp. Can someone please explain how this works? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I received ssp when I was off ill from a job that i had only been in for a few months.
It is paid through your employer into your bank like normal (i think it is half your usual pay), although it doesnt actually come from your employer.
See the jobcentreplus website for more info

SSP is explained here & tells you if you qualify for it http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/statutory_sick_pay.asp.
It's currently £70.05/week if you qualify. It'll be paid through your husbands employer as per his normal wage & will normally be shown on a separate line on his pay slip to his normal wage. Depending on his contract/the firms sick pay policy, he could end up with anything from this being his whole 'wage' for the week, to the employer paying his full wage (with SSP included within the wage).0 -

Also remember he needs to produce medical evidence of his inability to work.0

Statutory Sick Pay is paid for the first 28weeks of illness/sickness from employment, providing medical evidence is submitted to employer.
SSP is paid by government via employer, and is completely separate to salary.
Hope this helps.:)Love generously, praise loudly, live fully
