Quick Question .........

If you were staying away for a couple of days would you tine your heating to come on say for an hour at a time say twice a day or would you leave it off completely and then come home to a freezing cold house ?

I always turn my heating off when im going away for a few days - i find if its cold outside, its normally warmer inside, even if the heating is off.
My house tends to heat up quite quickly when i turn the heating on, so i dont think i would need to leave it to come on.

We tend to just turn the heating down to about 15C (normally 19C), so it is off most the time, but comes on if the temperature drops a lot.

I went away for a few days over Christmas and left mine on timer but reduced the thermostat ... it was noticeable cold when we came home and I put the temp up and it took about 2hrs to bring the whole house up to muster, well, a level where we felt it was comfortable to turn it back down and enjoy the residual heat.

I think I recall reading somewhere that it is best to keep it ticking over at a lower temp but I'm not sure where I read it - it was many years ago because my MIL was going on an African safari over Christmas and New Year and wondered the same thing.

    Hi icebaby,

If it was just for a couple of days I think I'd leave mine on the timer.....especailly at this time of the year when there is a chance that pipes can freeze. I hate coming home to a cold house.

You should get some more help with this on the Fuel & other heating board so I'll move your thread over there shortly.

Don't usually go away myself over the winter but because of the frozen pipes issue (happened to someone locally to me and they burst) I would put the timer on for a short length of time each day, at a lower setting of course.
One day I might be more organised...........
