Why is it that people are so desperate to own houses?

I think they stop taking when there is less than 21k left over... which for an old un in a quality care home isnt actually that bad, its not like they will ever have to put in new double glazing, put a new roof on, or buy a new car... settee, or furniture.
You have to take responsibility for yourself until you die, the government should just level the field a little.Plan

EXACTLY!
It's what I said much earlier!
Everybody pays, or nobody pays.
Or, are you talking a different fairness? :rotfl:
Of course there's always the fairness that people that can pay, get care, but people that can't pay don't.0 -
For me there are a number of factors that have made me more interested in buying then renting:
- I recall growing up in NZ where my folks could only ever rent. They both worked and were keen to own their own home.
- I had a bad rental experience when I moved back to the UK
- owning means I can decorate how I want, I can change the garden etc
- I don't have to negotiate at regular intervals with a complete stranger to keep my home
- I can have a fixed mortgage so, again a complete stranger can't tell me at regular intervals that one of my main costs is going to increase
- I can have pets without having to negotiate about it
a good friend of mine is a landlord and I've watched him go from thinking he was going to be wonderfully rich and able to retire early on the gains to realising his own greed has lead to him stacking the excellent equity he had in the beginning against more and more over-priced property purchases.
He now says it doesn't matter that he only has interest-only mortgages and the properties will never be paid off as the wholse lot will just get taken back by the bank when he dies.
I'm REALLY glad I'm not one of his tenants!0 -
I want to buy because I don't want to live in a cr4phole and feel guilty for dossing about in my PJs for weeks on end, not apparently going out to work ... and feeling I have to justify what I do to earn money, and fearing inspections when I might feel I have to justify why there are a pile of cardboard boxes, or hobbies stuff and why I've not made the bed.
In my own home I don't have to answer to anybody, ever. I can just bumble about, knowing I can live my life and spend my time/money how I want (not on looking for a new place and paying for credit checks that I'll fail).
I just want a little place that's my place, safe from the world's intrusion.
Yours

That's because you think everyone has the same though process as you - ie only having opinions that also agree with their own self-interest. I'll probably inherit more than most people my age will. But I'm not so blinkered as to think it is my right to have things better than someone else who may well work harder and put more into society than me.
Yup. Totally agree. I, also, figure to inherit alot of money. It could be close a million but prob at least £500k.I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Work hard? people who inherit money have done no hard work to deserve it. Which is precisely the point. We believe people should get out of life what they put into it. You think they should get out of life how rich their parents on.
I assume you will be giving your inheritance to the state as you would'nt want to be as greedy and as money grabbing as the rest of us who prefer to take care of our own with funds we rightfully own.
I thought not. Actually you thought wrong. i wont accept any inheritance. I will donate it to charity. I dont want to live my life and be dependent on others (inheritance). How can you abuse benefits people and then accept an inheritance. The principle is the same. Its living off other people. I want everything I own to be mine that I have earnt.
No one gives you a helping hand in this life, you have to look after yourself and your own. Except if you have rich parents of course then you do. Which is exactly why inheritance is wrong.
I've never yet had a handout, why should I be expected to supplement others when I have a family of my own who deserves anything we have more. Why do your family deserve your money? DId your kids help you through school or something?
They may not need it but they deserve it.
I'd have my assets burned before giving them to the state.
How can you write this and not see that you contridict yourself at every turn. I have marked in red where you have done this.I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -
Classic thread.
Some people may get an inheritance that they haven't 'earned', oh noes this is unfair! It's life though so just like high house prices, deal with it.0 -

"You should get out of life what you put into it" ?
You've said it many times.
It seems very clear though, that you have not answered my question earlier.
What about those living on Social Security?
Are you going to starve them to death?
See.... you don't believe that at all! You just want things to be the way YOU want them. Tough....nobody else out there cares.0
