Mortgage shortfall - ex partner (Help)

Hello
I really need some help with my situation. In 2008 I put my name onto a joint remortgage for my ex partners house as he was about to lose it and had a lot of outstanding debt. In January 2009 I moved out after the relationship broke down and my partner had told me he would keep paying the monthly payments as I had to move out into rented accommodation.. In August 2009 an injunction was made against him for violent behaviour and it meant he could not come anywhere near me, he still owes court costs of £2500 (it cost me £5k in total) I found out months later that he had stopped paying the mortgage - the house was eventually repossessed earlier this year as he would not put the house on the market and then refused an offer that I accepted. The mortgage was for £167k and they sold it for £175k, the shortfall is £21k as he had not repayed anything for at least 18 months and there is an £8.5k early repayment charge. I have received a letter from the banks solicitors asking me to declare my income/outgoings and how I am going to pay the money back. I know I have been foolish in signing a mortgage document, but I could not pay rent and the mortgage. He lived in the house mortgage free for 18 months and the bank did nothing apart from send letters - I even asked them to repossess and they did nothing. I am trying to move on with my life as this individual has caused me a lot of problems and I am not sure where to go from here?? If anyone can offer any helpit would be much appreciated. Thanks.
