how do i re-gain a decent credit record ?

Hi. I am new to this forum and just logged on as i heard martin on radio 2, so hello to regular forum users. I hope that posting a thread is OK from newcomers as I can't see any answers to my quiries on the site.
I have a bad credit record due to being reckless when I was young free and single and had banks throwing money at me left right and centre and daily offers for more. I eventually got myself a CCJ back in 2000. I paid it off immediatly and thought that was the end of it. I found out recently that you have to request that it be removed from your file, which i did about 6 months ago. My problem is that I am still now unable to get credit, almost anywhere. I need to re-mortgage my house, purely to get a better deal and more importantly my bank will still not let me have adebit card, a cheque book or any thing else like that. I have written to them and asked why but they just tell me sorry, nothing they can tell me or do about it. It is driving me round the bend as there is sometimes stuff i have to pay for and do not like to carry around large amounts of cash. I also resent being treated like a child 7 years after a bad episode.
My thanks in advance to anyone who can help me or point me in the right direction.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the MSE forum.

The first thing to do is to get a copy of your credit report.

This is the best place to start.

You can get a current account through Citibank, it has a debit card and chequebook. It is available to people with poor credit histories.
edit: If you apply for the account via Quidco, you will also receive £50 for your troubles
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.
  • Thanks for your reply. I did get a copy of my credit report from equifax, just the basic one i paid 2 quid for. I could not make head nor tail of it though and it did not tell me how I can improve the credit report. I will look into citibank and i imagine that quidco is a website.
    Thanks again. Iain
