How to cancel Experian membership?

Hiya,
I registered for the free trial period as I was going to apply for credit and wanted to make sure that there was nothing untoward on my credit history. It was really easy to register and I could view my entire report immediately, online! Instant access was brilliant as I could note what the issues were and had my records updated during the free trial period. I then applied for credit and my application was approved. (I had applied for credit about 6 months ago and didn't get it) so it really does make sense to see what's happening on your report.
I have just cancelled my membership as my trial period just ended - I called the freephone number (0800 561 0083) and cancelling was easy peasy.
Overall, it was a very pleasant and beneficial experience. :j0 -
Thank you to everyone who posted on this thread. I used the 0800 561 0083 number and spoke to a member of the Experian team called Mark. After asking a few quick security questions he cancelled my trial, (after explaining that I could have a reduced rate.) The call was quick and professional and took less than 5 minutes.0

The same here using the free number, spoke to Danny, instant cancellation, quick and painless, absolutely no drama. Superb service I would use again.0

I went to their page, searched for how to cancel and got to the following
http://help.creditexpert.co.uk/help/sv635/Cancel_and_duration/cancel_membership
It clearly states there that you CAN email them to cancel. I did this yesterday and got a reply from some peon today quoting terms and conditions at me trying to tell me I HAD to ring them to cancel.
Needless to say they just got a nice long rant back with a link to the above page and several quotes from it clearly stating you can cancel by email. I have informed them that they have now been told in writing to cancel it, that I now consider the matter closed and that if they attempt to charge me for anything then they will be dealing with the bank.
I also had the equifax free trial, I emailed them to cancel that one at the same time, and got a reply today saying it had been cancelled, no problems.
If they hadn't peed me off by replying trying to quote T&C's at me which COMPLETELY contradict their own website then I might have been willing to ring the freephone number to cancel it, but after that the can kiss my butt.0 -
Hi ewokuk
I would like to thank you for bringing this FAQ page to our attention; we are now looking into this for you.
As per the Distance Selling act, all customers can exercise their statutory right to cancel their Credit Expert service, within 14 days. The 14 day period starts when the contract with the customer is concluded. For customers who receive instant access, the 14 days will begin once they have signed-up. For PIN customers, the 14 days begins once they have activated the PIN.
Once the 14 day period is passed we do ask that you call or write to us to cancel your membership, if you would like me to check to see if your membership is still active email me your details to uksocialsupport@experian.com I would be more than happy to look into this for you.
Once again thanks for bring your confusion to my attention I will now contact my product teams with this feedback to resolve this in the near future.
Regards

I read this thread and decided to call to cancel mine. It was fairly easy, no pressure, but she did ask me why. She offered me a chance for a cheaper (£3.99) simple alert service, but I declined. I must say though it's been very helpful to us. My credit rating was as low as it could be and now it's at the top end of excellent and has been for a year. It took a few years of hard work, and two jobs, and no social life... but I can finally sleep well at night and have money spare.0

Very pleased to find this thread, since I only 'joined up' with Experians CreditExpert 'free trial' a couple of days ago. Simply to find out my current status..... For free, as it says on the tin.
Then I google Experian Problems & discover the snags....
I just want say here many thanks to all the contributors pointing out the pitfalls of Experians 'Free' Offer.
Just proves how necessary a site like MSE is.
Thanks all: )0 -
Dropped an email through the support desk saying I wished to cancel, got a response within 48 hours saying cancellation complete0

Thought of posting this as i was caught cold and experian tried to squeeze every penny they could.
1. took membership out
2. set alarm to cancel it after 29 days instead of 30.
3. thought it would be as easy as going on a website and cancel, simply because i joined online (similar to amazon prime)
What happened:
on 29th day (saturday) evening found out this cannot be cancelled through their website - Thanks to Moneysupermarket found the number to call
it was saturday and they were closed.
Sunday they are closed too.
So dropped email on Saturday evening to cancel as i was still in my right.
By monday i was over by one day, and agent simply wouldn't accept the argument and i told them I had dropped an email etc... so after checking all that lady agreed to cancel and guaranteed that i wont be charged.
Fast Forward MONTH later.
Checked my credit card bill and YES i was charged.
Picked up phone and told all the history , obviously it was difficult after a month . but agent wouldnt agree with date lines he said it was my duty to cancel in time. When i explained i had till midnight to cancel and if they are not working then its not upto me as i had signed up online, late night when they were not open! he did not agree and i asked to speak to manager and log a complaint.
He logged a complaint and said someone will call back, noone called me.
Third week i called and chased and complained again and told them about ofcom and their unfair practices.
Two days later i had call from manager who agreed with everything i had said and refunded and cancelled the direct debit. I told him that first agent who i spoke to could have done the same thing but looks like they are only told to stand their ground on anything customer has to say.
He agreed that they should have online cancellation facility so customers could cancel happily. he said he will pass on my feedback but i doubt as not many people call to cancel/complain.
Thirdly I thought if i cancelled next day after registration my report wont be available but that is not the case, you can register and cancel next day and your report is still available till the end of the membership.
Experian is unfair! them being in this business should be setting high standards and not steal from people. I was thinking of buying other services but this has put me off !
They are feeding on people's fear of keeping good rating and those trying to get mortgage, moving houses etc. and these people will most likely to forget these charges due to number of things going on at any point in their life. Experian should change immediately and i told them to look at their reviews here and on other sites.
I am internet savvy and do check reviews before buy but i COMPLETELY TRUSTED experian and then found these reviews. I wished i had read reviews before. Maybe i am late but i thought of sharing this for others good !
Hope you never go anywhere near Experian free trial. This is fraud in daylight.0
