Car Insurance for new drivers

Hi all,
I know insurance premiums at the minute are extremely high, especially for newly qualified drivers, but has anyone recently passed had any decent quotes? Now i'm not after any particular car makes as i don't have one yet, but having used price comparison sites with a few different types of cars, fully comp is generally coming in around £1000 - £1200 for a car valued at £1000.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on your age too Sam:o if you are 17 -21 the quotes are very reasonable, my first car cost £750 and £1750 to insure 3rd party:eek: I was 20 at the time and that was for a wee 950cc Fiesta.I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0

Sam the value of the car is irrelevant, it is the insurance group of the car that is relevant. My colleague has been trying to get insurance for his 18 year old son. The best he has got is £2200 for a 1200cc car from Axa.
Do you mind me asking your age and what company gave you the £1000 quote, as I'm sure he would be interested.0 -

I've just turned 40- decided to bite the bullet and attempt to learn! I'm not 100% sure as it was through cofused.com comparison site, but the Post Office was definitely one of the cheapest.Norn Iron Club Member 417:beer:0 -
Try direct line for a quote, they tend to be at least as cheap as any on the price comparison sites. Remember third party is often more expensive than fully comp!0

im in the car trade and sell quite a few 1st timers their 1st wheels, most of them seem to go through quinn direct and even still the premiums are scary!0

BIG TIP:
Ring the insurance dealer - the websites are misleading. When I first learned to drive two years ago the cheapest I was offered online was £1700-2200. Over the telephone it was £760 with Open and Direct.0
