Baby clothes and VAT

Hi All.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place please feel free to move it.

I was just going to do an online tesco direct clothes shop and was pleased with myself as thought I was doing well. Until I checked the basket and VAT has been added I've only bought baby clothes from size 3 months - 9 months. Are baby clothes no longer VAT free? And if they are when I go to the store can I claim the money back? I haven't placed my order now as too upset as can't really afford it with the VAT. I had put to collect in store as well not sure if that made a difference.

Sorry if this makes no sense just really upset thank you for any help you can give me.

Baby clothes are still zero rated (equivlane to being VAT free).

Are you sure that Tesco have added VAT on top. Most unusual for a retailer to show VAT exclusive prices and then add them on at the end.

Has the price actually increased from the advertised price (ie, did you select an item costing £1.00 and at the checkout it is still £1 but now says including VAT...or at checlout was it now £1.20?

Also, other baby items accessories like bottles are not zero rated so if you;ve got a mixture of clothes and other stuff then VAT may apply to the 'other stuff'

If the price you clicked on is the price you pay then no worries, but if tesco have added VAT on top, then they're wrong

Weird.

I've just registered with the site and put a few baby things into the basket and I too get a total with an "Includign £x VAT". So you are definatley right and not reading it wrongly.

The VAT showing on your order is the VAT fraction of your total spend £30.30 (ie, £0.30 x 1 dividedd by 6 = £5.05) so they are not adding VAT on top of the selling price, they are saying it is included in the marked prices.

So if you are buying booties at £2.00 they are not asking for anymore from you, just that the £2.00 actually contains a bit of VAT.

I suspect the Tesco website is poorly programmed and automatically calculates VAT in the total, whether there is any VAT or not, so I think there isn;t any VAT being charged at all, just that the website total is saying there is.

I've dropped them an email asking why they are charging VAT on childrens clothing, if I get a response, I'll post it here, suspect they'll say it is just a website glitch, but well spotted!

I think this is more of a generic thing than the fact they're actually charging VAT - I think their website must add on VAT to everything - but you say that you cant afford it now that they have added the VAT but you do realise that the VAT is no more, it was 'included' in the prices you saw before you got to the checkout?

Try adding the items up if you dont understand what I mean.
