Condensing Boiler

Have you thought about changing to gas? To give you an idea, it cost approx £2000 to have our oil system changed across. We didn't need anything changed in the house radiator wise as most already had thermostats fitted. The emersion was removed freeing up a massiv space in the airing cupboard, the water tanks were removed from the attic giving me loads more room to store stuff and the free standing boiler in the garage is a much smaller wall mounted model, again, giving more space to store/move around.
My direct debit is £30/month but as I've only just taken on the contract myself it probably should be £40 but this gives me some leeway. For £40/month I have constant hot water for baths and dishes, the house is never freezing and I have mains gas for cooking instead of Calor canisters. It's an expensive outlay but given we had been getting at least 2, if not 3 tanks of oil over the winter, I'd say the initial outlay will be paid off within the next year or so and it's only been in a year. That's £1500 just for oil over the winter and doesn't take into account how much it costs to run the emersion for hot water (or boiling a kettle for dishes) or gas for cooking although it took ages to use up one canister.0 -

Gas isn't universally available in Northern Ireland. We were a "gas free" country until quite recently because it wasn't worth laying a pipeline from Scotland to here until they decided they could take excess production from the Kinsale fields. Plus gas has just gone up by 30%.0 -
I'm outside the gas belt in NI too.0

I wouldn't worry about it. With the price just gone up by 30% it's going to finish up more expensive than oil. To be honest, it's much cheaper to burn coal at the minute. Thank God our dual system is still in place and working. So many people took their back boilers out or disabled them over the last 15 years. How many are now wishing they hadn't?0 -

Unfortunately I'm in a house with no fireplace let alone a back burner. My folks have one so they can heat not only the room but the radiators around the house. I'm in a pathetic excuse of a house that doesn't even have insulation under the dormer roof so you can imagine how much fun it is heating it :mad:0 -

Are you in Norn Irn or Englandshire?0 -
Well funny enough we have been discussing this all weekend and have now changed our minds about a new boiler and have decided to change to gas. Hubby has a friend who works for Phoenix so we checked out the installation price. I wonder how much it would cost per mth for a 4 bedroom detatched house for gas?Have you thought about changing to gas?
