Thinking about a loan

BF has suggested that we buy a new car which we would need a loan for. I am dead against this because I am fighting hard to get rid of the little bit of debt we have. I've persuaded him to wait till Apr when at least the loan would be the only debt we have.
But would I be better with a LOB credit card? Are these just for balance transfers or can they be used for purchases? Would I have to get a loan and then transfer the balance onto the card to get the best deal?
Eek, don't know what to do to make the best savings. Don't think we'd have any problem getting a loan as we have a mortgage and no other debts, but not sure.
By the way, he has suggested that he wants a loan of £7K, and I noticed that most credit cards (I have two, Nationwide and Tesco which are empty) give me a limit of about £4K or £5K. The Nationwide one I have had for a while which is prob why the credit limit is high, but the Tesco one is new and the opening credit limit was £4K.
