Rusty microwave

The white paint in my microwave is going rusty, particularly under the glass plate. There are also a few small patches on the sides, door frame and "ceiling".
Is this a problem or shall I just keep using it regardless? Or is there a way to clean it off and repaint -(long shot I know, just would prefer not to spend much/anything).

I might be wrong here but i believe that if the rust eats through (Which it will do even if you paint it) then microwaves (Very dangerous ) could escape!

I think that this is terminal.

nah I think you can purchase microwave paint so this isn't a problem you may have to remove the wave guide cover (maybe replace this from local appliance spares shop too) and give everything a good clean before repainting but this is dead easy.

Also, microwaves are not generally classed as dangerous - you would feel the warmth well before being cooked just make sure the holes in the mesh door are in good nick as that will be the only likely place the microwave energy will leak from!

I take it that you have never had a microwave burn then.

Microwaves cook from the INSIDE out and are extremely painful. They damage tissue around the bone before you feel anything!!

Yes, I HAVE suffered a microwave burn.

    Like I said.

I use to repair microwaves ( )

THEY DO NOT COOK FROM THE INSIDE UTTER CRAP - this idea completely turns physics on its head and I really don't know where the idea came from.

How exactly did you get the burn?

    like I said.

I will just add - I use to repair comercial stuff that was generally not painted inside so I never had to touch up but a google search shows that the stuff is readily available!

Ten Reasons to Throw out your Microwave Oven

From the conclusions of the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies, we can no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, we will conclude this article with the following:

1). Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term - permanent - brain damage by "shorting out" electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].

2). The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.

3). Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.

4). The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.

5). Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.

6). The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.

7). Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America.

8). The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.

9). Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.

10). Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.

I can neither prove, nor disprove any one of those points (I would suggest someone with more expertese could) but the op has asked a question and I answered based on fact.
I have always found it interesting that Russian industry demands that employee's working close to microwave sources should be subject to much lower levels of radiation than people in western countries, so I would never suggest any of the above is crap, except the fact that microwave ovens DO NOT cook from the inside. THAT IS FACT!
However, I would suggest the real problem with the use of microwaves is not the method used to cook the food / liquid, but maybe the ingredients used in most of the ready meals you are likely to stick into a microwave oven. That is something that if anything, worries me the most.
  • Oh dear, I seem to have stirred up a hornets nest here. I don't do much cooking with my microwave - just baked spuds and scrambled eggs really, but I find it useful for reheating things.
I will look into paint although the idea of dismantling it worries me.
I really wanted to know if it is safe to use it while it is rusty?

i had a couple of microwaves that went rusty and used them till i thought it wasnt safe, what i have learnt is to dry the inside of the micro and under the turntable esp after baking potatoes or anything that makes a lot of moisture
  • At what point did you decide they weren't safe?
Good idea about drying them after using - I haven't done this.
