When I closed my computer yesterday a microsoft message came up that an update would be installed before the computer shut down. Today the computer won't start. When I try safe mode it stops at a line ending......."System32\Drivers\Mup.sys". I feel that there must be a connection with the "update".
Can anyone please give me some advice to get my computer working. The operating system is XP.
Thank you

Mup.sys is probably about the worst one it could have halted on, and some will say you need to re-install, however, start the PC, keep tapping F8 until you get options, choose command prompt, type this
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and press then press enter
You may need to have a couple of goes with different restore points
Saw this, it may apply
Windows xp freezes at mup.sys
I had this problem as well it turned out not to be the mup.sys file that was the problem... it actually loaded it was the last file in the series... what actually fixed my problem was a registry entry that tells xp to look for another keyboard... I changed the 1 to a 0 and viola... booted right up...0 -
In my experience this usually means a re-install of Windows XP. Your first task will be to back up your personal files - even if it means removing the hard drive and accessing it either via a USB enclosure, or as a slave on another PC.
The reason for the former, is that your system may have shut down in the middle of an update, thus your system is in limbo, neither one thing nor the other.0 -

Thanks for the reply santer.
The menu that I get when pushing F8 doesn't have an option for "command prompt". "there is one for safe mode with command prompt" but there is not the opportunity to type an instruction. As for the second suggestion, I don't know how to make a registry entry.
Please can you clarify?0 -
if you select safe mode with command prompt using arrow keys and enter, what happens?
Is there any hardware connected to it externally, other than keyboard/mouse?
make and model of pc, do you need any data from it, do you have recovery discs?!!

Sorry, it's been a while since I used XP
Go for safe mode with command prompt, it will take ages to get anywhere, then you should see a black box with a flashing cursor
Type
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Then press enter
At this point it is worth a go, as you can see by the other reply, a re-install is a probable
Most techs see it and re-install, but I had nothing better to do or lose one day and kept restarting it, fifth go and away it went, although I backed up and re-installed then
This is another option, use the guided help

Thanks to you all. I have clicked the thanks key for each of you.
This is beyond me. I don't want to risk !!!!!!ing up the stuff on the computer (my wife would kill me). What really annoys me is that this problem seems to be caused by a microsoft update.0 -
Did nothing happen when you chose safe mode with command prompt?
Have you got the XP CD
If you have, put that into a drive then restart the PC and keep tapping the enter key, it may load from that, if not, you would need to change the boot order by tapping the delete key as soon as you see the first screen, then looking through the options for boot order, change it to CD ROM drive then hard drive, press F10 to save, then press enter, possibly twice
If you run in a shop with it, they may go for re-installing, so make sure you have it in writing that they will save to disc any data you need0 -
Has it got different headings across the top, and if you use the arrow keys they move to different pages with different options, then if you press enter it will show the different options
Some have different keys and it usually says which to press on the first screen, though it looks as if you are on the correct page for set up
Press the F10 key to save any changes, maybe make a note of them so you can reverse anything if you need to0 -
The disc has run and I've got to WindowsXP Setup. I have 3 options: setup Windows XP, repair XP using recovery console, or to quit without installing. Where do I go from here?0

Start here
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
"- To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3. - Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
- Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
- Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. "
