Car insurance thread

The only way BR will affect your insurance is if you are paying by installments, and your premium is over £500 pounds, it will not affect your premiums. My premiums went up by £150 with the insurer that I was with, and I had been discharged for over 6 months. Went on to Quidco and arranged insurance with Renew Insurance for less than my original was, and also got £35 cash back as well. House insurance and car insurance are entirely different and therefore cannot be compared to one another. That is why you do no see peeps struggling to get car insurance. My BIL who is not BR or has never been BR had his premiums rise substantially as well, it is well known that car insurance in general has risen.
INAN, try not to patronise me please, I am no fool, and only speak from experience, both of purchasing contents insurance and car insurance. If people do as I do, and shop around I am sure they can overcome any obstacles they meet.:pB&SC No. 298

I have reread your post and I still consider it to be patronising. If you read my posts you will see I have obtained insurances amongst other things by using comparison websites. I can only offer my experiences on here, and on another website I use. Your premium will not be affected by BR end of. Show me the evidence that post 12 is supposed to support. If people cannot be bothered to do what I have done then that is not my fault. As stated I changed insurers via Quidco and received £35 back, this was done after getting the original quote using Gocmpare.com and I still pay by installments. Whilst I agree with CS, while we are in the position we are, we have to go out as individuals and sort our own problems out, it is no use quoting what insurance risks are all the time.:pB&SC No. 298

No problem, feel free to do so. But as I have said, speaking from experience, and I have changed insurers twice since being BR, that BR has NEVER been mentioned when renewing my CAR insurance.Ineedaname wrote: »I'll remind you of that if I am told by an insurer that they have inflated a quote due to BR.
Obviously I won't be daft enough to take such a policy on and will search elsewhere for a more competitive quote.:pB&SC No. 298

As I have said many times in relation to contents insurance. That's only your personal experience, it may not reflect the experience of others.
I think this is the first time I've seen car insurance discussed here, would be interesting to hear other members' experiences. When I joined, I needed a name. The forum members gave one to me...I am INAN

I have had the same experience as Dojo when renewing car insurance.
I spoke to several insurers whilst shopping around and was told every time they do 'not rate' on BR.0 -
Hi INAN, I must admit no one has had problems that I remember it is mainly home insurance that is the problem, I've search loads of threads and they all agree, this one may help too.

Hi OP, I have just last week renewed my car insurance.
Renewal amount from current insurer was £1500, an increase of more than 50%! I had no claims and had an additional years no claims discount. Mental!
I did a few comparisons on the websites and there were a few that were a hundred or so less. (There was no BR question on the comparison site.)
I tried Co-op insurance as they are now my favourite bank after going BR, and they quoted £971! I phoned them as I need to pay monthly, explained BR, they said no problem, you will fail the credit check and we just need to over-ride it.
Done in 10 minutes over the phone, no increase and no issues due to the BR.
Hope that helps.0 -
There you go INAN , thanking tsio but not acknowledging that what others have written about car insurance is correct.
BR has no affect on car insurance.0 -
Hi all, here's my understanding of BR on car insurance.
Broadly speaking - as far as I am aware - insurers don't give two hoots if you have been BR or not when it comes to car insurance. This is different from household insurance and the only logic I can apply to this is because they think once someone's BR they're more likely to inflate/doctor household claims and you cannot doctor car insurance claims in the same way you potentially could a home policy. (Of course I think we're all in agreement the insurers using this argument is questionable to begin with).
That shouldn't affect your bottom line premium. What is more likely is if a credit check is than ran on you if you pay by monthly instalments then they increase your APR. I haven't come across this though before in a real life experience.
If you have followed my thread on insurance you'll probably remember it's my partner not me who was bankrupt, so this is an area she will have no influence on. In 2009 my car insurance was a smidgen under the £200 mark for the year, and was under £200 for the previous couple of years. Last year I couldn't get it below £240. My renewal has come in this year at £260 but a quick search online has shown it's back to about £200 (and I can probably get it lower if I put work into it). I'm one of the really keen buyers using Martin's guide to thrash the comparison sites, take into consideration cashback and consider screenscraper deals too.
So I can only illustrate on my personal experience that car insurance spiked quite badly percentage-wise last year and BR had no bearing on it.
Hope this helps you all.0 -
I think (and it's only my hunch) that the reason they ask for contents insurance is that it would be easier to make a fraudulent claim than for car insurance. You crash your car and they either repair it or write it off.
With contents insurance it would in theory be easier to claim. Eg. I have cover for contents outside the home. I "accidentally" lose my laptop on the train.
In a lot of cases people don't have receipts so more difficult to substantiate a claim and therefore higher risk.0
