Cleaning roller blinds?

  • Hi I'm hoping you lovely folks can help me. I have two very long roller window blinds in the kitchen and bathroom. They are in need of a really good clean and I'm unsure how to tackle them. Should I take them off the rollers and clean them and put them back on or wouldn't that work? They are pretty big so I also wondered if I could clean them in the bath, not with me in it :)
    Many thanks for your help.

You may be able to take the whole thing apart, wash the fabric and reassemble. You may find that the fabric shrinks, though :o

I'll add this to a somewhat older thread to give you more ideas :)

I had the exact problem with our bathroom roller blind this time last year. I took it down & carefully unrolled the fabric. I washed it on a 30 degree gentle machine wash and dried it, then attached the fabric & rolled it up again. I couldn't believe how well this worked. It's a white blind with black lettering on it & the black condensation really showed up badly on it & looked horrible. I suppose it does depend what fabric the various blinds are made from, but washing this one has made no difference to the look or fit whatsoever. I'd definitely do it again, but don't need to yet, as a year later, no black blobs have returned. I didn't know if unrolling, washing & refitting would be possible, but as the only alternative was buying a new blind anyway, I decided I'd got nothing to lose by trying it.

  • Our blind is a cream colour and OH sprayed with a bleach spray and cleaned it that way. It worked brilliantly, didn't change the colour or anything!

    Hi,
I know its not quite the same, but the roll-out blind/awning on our camper van must have got put away sometime, damp, and was very badly mildewed when it was rolled out again earlier this year.
I took a strong solution of white vinegar and water, and brushed it with a
soft broom......scale it down a bit, and brush it with a dish washing brush & vinegar, and I'm confident it will work for you too.
However, I do think you should take it up with the company you bought it off...as others have said, if it is not neglect by you, then it is 'unfit for purpose'.

Hello, my white IKEA roller blinds could do with a bit of a freshening up, but I'm a bit apprehensive about taking them apart. Does any one have any tips such as various sprays etc?

    Many thanks

    Hi Inbloom,

As your thread has dropped down the board with no replies I've added it to the existing one on cleaning roller blinds that might give you some ideas.

  • I removed the plastic strip from the bottom of the blind and this let me fit the fabric into a bucket with a solution of the vanish oxi action. I used a toothbrush to gently scrub the mould spots and soaked it for a few hours. First soak got rid if about 70% of it. Changed water and made up some more solution and scrubbed again got rid of almost all the mould. Some marks remain but can only see close up so saved on the cost of a new blind. Hope this helps!
