Nil Tax Code

Can anyone give me another reason for having a NIL tax code other than BR. I need to submit my payslips as evidence to the home office to sponsor a friend to come to the UK on a Visit visa. Im worried that if I submit my pay slips and they assume that im currently BR, they will not allow me as a sponsor for my friend. The only other reason I can find on the net is for students with summer jobs.
Anoyone know of any other situation?
Thanks
