Job interview for a second job advice needed!

Hi, I have an interview next week for a second job I really really want it and dont want to mess it up I made a complete mess of the last interview I had I think I said way to much!! lol.

I currently work in Admin for a firm of surveyors but would like a change as we are so quiet at present and there have all ready been pay offs and it is likely to happen again end of next month. So anyway I work part time and this second job (Boots) is only 9 hours a week and fits in nicely with the days I already work without being unmanageable.

I guess one of the biggest things I am unsure of is do I tell them this or not? If I did could this affect me being offered the job?

If they at any point offered me more hours or a permanent position I would take it I kinda thought this would be a good way to get my foot in the door!. If it had been more hours I would have left my current job.

Oh and how do I stop talking so much when nervous?

Thank you x

  • Hey Katief07

As far as I can see there is no particular benefit in telling them about your other job - if they ask then fine, but I can't see any real point in volunteering the information otherwise

Re: nerves I find I perform better when I don't mind what the outcome is - if you put loads of pressure on yourself that you really want something then you will be much more nervous. Remember that it is not all one way (i.e. start thinking that you will be a great asset to them as well - that should help redress the balance!)

    Good luck!!
  • thank you! glad some one replied. Hopefully nerves will be calm
  • I'd prepare something to say if I were you, as with Christmas coming up they may ask what days you are available other than the 9 hours and you'll have to give them a reason why you're not available every day.

I know someone who asked to stop an interview for a few moments to collect herself as she was so nervous - and got the job. Being nervous because you really want the job seems a reasonable thing to me.

The way to not talk so much, is to practice. Can you get a friend of a friend (ie not someone you know too well) to ask you a few interviewy type questions, and practice saying what the employer wants to hear.

For example, if asked whether you could work more hours at busy times, instead of giving all the information in your first post, you'll have practised saying something like "I'd love to work extra hours if given the chance, but these would have to be on Fridays and Saturdays because I have an administrative job on Wednesdays and Thursdays" or whatever.

Employer doesn't care what your job is exactly, as long as there isn't a conflict of interest. Employer knows no-one can survive on 9 hours a week so won't be surprised you need another job. Employer wants to know when you can work FOR THEM.

  • Big thank you to all those who gave advice. I had my interview this morning and it went really well (i think) The woman interviewing was so nice she made me feel less nervous. The interview was not like what I had read up on the web I was given a senario of a woman looking to change shampoo and had to say how I would help what I would ask etc and then a had to pick a product that I use/like and sell it basically The thought of this would normally have scared me but I think I was actually ok with it. she also told me I scored 96% on the online assessment which I am guessing is pretty good. Should hear back Monday as there was three more people being interviewed today. thanks again x
