Out of date gingerbread at Lidl?

Options
I gave a good friend of mine a packet of gingerbread from Lidl (didn't tell them where it was from!) for CHristmas. He told me recently that he'd had to chuck it cos it was two years out of date. Now I find this really hard to believe, and I'm wondering if it was the date of manufacture instead? What does anyone else think? I can't believe that even a cut price supermarket would risk selling things that far out of date?

Also we ate some of the same batch and they tasted fine.... and we're not dead! LOL

It does sound somewhat extreme - but that said I have come across a packet in Tesco that was similarly out of date. Heaven only knows how that happened with all their strict rotations! The rest of the items (same items that is) were in code - just a one off I think. Perhaps it was the same with your friend?
I sincerely doubt that anywhere would sell something so far past its code - or as you say, perhaps he misread the 'production' date for the 'use by'. Chances are the info was printed in foreign and all he could read was the numbers, so quite possible.

My daughter works for M & S. She says they sometimes get stuff with the wrong date printed on it by the supplier, they are not allowed to sell it.
