This system seems very unfair and I would consider it a very good reason for looking for another job.

I feel that I am being put at an unfair advantage simply because I don't have children and choose not to live an excessive distance from work. Is it fair that they can selectively discriminate in this way?

Are you being serious? Is this some kind of wind up? I would say the criteria they used is the fairest way of allocating it.

Are you in the public sector?
  • Am I being serious? YES I am! My perception of it is that certain people are being treated less favourably than others. Ok, so I don't have childcare issues, but not being able to park at work will have quite an impact on my life, which I appreciate some might not consider a big deal but to me it is.

In addition to that I really don't think the organisation has really considered the true implications it will have. They no longer pay mileage for work purposes between our different sites, instead insisting we use their newly introduced shuttle service, all very well, but the service does not cover all sites across the organisation. So now, for example, if you want to go to one site that is not covered by the shuttle, it will take the best part of an hour to get there on public transport when travelling by car would have taken 10-15 minutes max. I feel that all it will achieve is less efficiency and employees feeling under pressure for not having the time to get their work done within normal working hours.

Unfortunately it isn't discriminatory in this case (or at least doesn't seem to be).

Don't get me wrong I understand your frustration - I'm single, no kids so get shafted on everything from council tax, no financial support from government, no tax breaks, assumption I will work holiday periods because without kids, xmas means nothing, but you have to work August because its the school holidays etc etc!!)

You need to take a deep breath and let the frustration go, it won't change the situation (unless you and others that haven't got a parking space can come up with an alternative allocation method that would satisy more people than currently and suggest this to the company) and just get on with work. If the shuttle doesn't go to the site you need to be at, then you will just have to spend more of your working day to get there. Not your fault.
  • I work in a hospital with on and off site staff car parking. I've been there since January and I'm currently on a waiting list which is about a year long. When people leave then the people at the top of the list get a permit.

I pay £6.50 per day to park in the hospital visitors car park.

Regardless of the situation now have you asked your boss what happens when a permit becomes available? Do they reassess everyone again or is there a waiting list?

Or one of my colleagues who needs a space because she is disabled - then I see her practically running up the street at lunchtime.

We've got one of those at our place, she's not well enough to walk 300 yards from the overflow car park but I wouldn't want to get in her way when she's heading for the canteen at lunchtime. Never seen anyone move so fast.
  • You could try local residents for cheap off street parking. I rent my space out and its about half the price compared to them parking in council car parks etc and I get enough to cover my electric bill & more each month.

Then you probably need to smile sweetly and say "Yes, of course I'll go to Site X, I've got 3 hours work to do there, so I'll be off about 9.30 and back around 4, OK?"

Is a bike any use? And does the company provide secure storage, shower facilities, bike mileage and access to the bike purchase scheme?

When you say your commute would double by public transport.. double from what?
  • I was just about to ask the same - what would your commute become? Mine is an hour each way by train and costs me £300 a month. Normally I would say it's a breeze, but today the trains line is shut and I'm stuck at home :(
