Is it ok to go direct?

Hi,
After many years and one 'nearly', we are finally looking to buy our first house.

I have read through the various advice on here regarding getting a mortgage preferably via a broker but I am tempted to go direct.

Is this a bad thing? I am pretty sure of what I want so I am not really looking for advice on what type of mortgage to go for its more about getting a good deal without too much hassle.

I have been looking at various comparison websites and YBS seem pretty competitive at the moment for 5 year fixed (85% LTV) mortgages. Plus from what I understand a broker wouldn't be too enthusiastic about recommending this product as they wouldn't get any commission.

I was thinking of popping into my local YBS branch and taking things from there but it seems to be going against the advice on here?

Is there anything I would benefit from going through a broker? e.g. is there more work/risk on my side if I went direct?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Many people that post on this forum have particularly issues to address. Thousands of people obtain mortgages directly from lenders.

If the YBS offers a product that suits your needs. Then make an appointment to discuss it further..
  • Be up front

Tell a broker thats what you are looking at doing it is the best you have found but will consider something better if they can find it.

One advantage of a broker is they deal with the lender for you.

Don't forget to consider followon rates.
  • Myself and my girlfriend were first time buyers in October 2010. We saw a couple of mortgage brokers briefly but in the end we got our mortgage direct from Britannia. They don't deal with brokers at all, and when we described the deal to the brokers they admitted straight away they wouldn't be able to beat it.

In my experience then, going direct can have its advantages.
