Smelly wicker

I brought a lovely large wicker stool/footrest at a car boot sale on Sunday. I checked it out for mould and rot but seemed in reasonable condition however I have noticed that it has a funky, musty smell about it.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how i could get rid of the smell?

  • You can use vinegar (or bleach if you're feeling brave!) to clean wicker. I left a damp towel in a wicker laundry basket once and only needed the vinegar and an old toothbrush to get it clean. It should take care of the odour, just make sure to let it dry very well. If you manage to find a sunny day, drying it in the sunshine should help as well. I use vinegar on my towels and it helps take care of any mustiness there so might be worth a try for the smell?

Thank you, i had a look at that link so will try the weak bleach idea. I was just worried about getting it too wet and making matters worse.

I know what you mean about the smell, it has put me off buying anything made of the stuff as it smells like dead grass! :D

You could try Simple Solutions from Pets at Home.

We use it for various smells, stinky sink, shoes, wet dog smell on the carpet when she has been rolling about etc, it is fantanstic.
