What do you think makes a good manager......my most memorable (in a good way) was inspirational and an excellent communicator.

  • I think a good manager must be approachable and not make criticisms personal.
  • I have a good manager who is approachable and manages my performance well and recognises that I need a few challenges.

    Mortgage free since 2014 :)

  • Somebody who can do the job if needed and not somebody who got it because of previous management experience
  • Thanks for your replies folks. I've just started managing a big team (100 plus) and although am a newish manager have worked my way up through the ranks, so like scheming gypsy says, I can do the job that I'm asking my team to do. I try and be supportive, non judgemental and approachable. I'm always looking for ways to improve myself and be a better manager, hence the post!

I'd also add to this - nor someone who got it because there was no other way to climb the career ladder. I've had to manage some pretty awful managers and the consequences of this, unfortunately!
  • I'd assume if you're managing this number, you have managers under you - ask them how they like to be managed and also tell them how you like things done. This sets out your stall from the outset so there is no misunderstanding and also shows you're willing to listen and tailor your management style.

When I worked in a factory, one of the directors would come round (ALMOST DAILY) regularly to say hello and thank-you for your service. That was really nice. (also they used to bring round the wages every week)

Tell people what you want them to achieve, not what you want them to do - and accept that your way of doing something may not be the only way. So long as you get the output that you want, does it really matter how they got there?
