  • Always look for offers and print out coupons, we did our shop today at Tesco and brought our £134 bill down to £97.
I used to buy expensive tinned tomatoes for spag bol, but now buy what's on offer, as no-one has noticed the difference, currently at Tesco, they have buy 1 get 2 free on a 4 pack of tin toms, which are £3.49 (so that's 3.49 for 12 tins)
There are frequent money off coupons for cereals (just got 6 boxes of honey shreddies free)
It's always worth doing an internet search on special offers in different supermarkets to see which are the cheapest.
Cheaper bread is a must to bring your bill down
I found 30p off utterly butterly coupon here too, they aren't store specific, so keep hold of them, so when you see 2 for £2, use 2 coupons and you are paying 70p each in the end.
Cheap pasta, just cook it a little longer
Have you any friends with chickens, or any farms around by you, this is normally a cheaper way of buying eggs.
Also for your fruit and veg go to a market or again, look for people who grow their own. Some car boot sales have produce sellers, and I save a fortune every sunday morning on my veg for the Sunday roast
I go to the supermarket Saturday early evening for reduced meat, stick it in the oven at 7.30am on Sunday morning, go to a boot sale, get home prep the fresh veg and sunday roast is served within the hour
Good luck on reducing your bill, with some internet searching and savvy buying you'll be surprised.
Don't forget to WOMBLE! pick up old receipts (within the last 28 days) and stick them in on receipt checker, you can do this with Tesco or Asda. You'll get a print off voucher if they aren't cheaper than their competitor(s)
Have been lucky enough to womble a couple of 5p off a litre of fuel at Tesco, you can use upto 3 in one transaction so you get 15p off per litre.
  • So I just found Rosspa!! I think I will order my veg and meat from Rosspa (providing it's worth it with the delivery charge) and then go to our local Farmfoods to stock up on cupboard and fridge items.

    My new plan is -

Friday delivery from Rosspa - fresh meat, fruit, veg £30
Friday shop at Farmfood - freezer and cupboard items £40
Mon/Tues top up at local shop (bread, milk, fruit, veg, anything forgotten) - £10

That's an £80 weekly shop, I don't even think we'll need that but I'll give it a month, see what we used and then drop the budget if necessary.

But anyway, before that starts I need to use up whatever is already in my cupboards and freezer! It's all stuff I hate though but OH has just put it in the trolley for the sake of it being on sale. I think I might gather up everything we're never going to eat and donate it to my Mum and then use the rest.

First weekly shop - Friday 30th September!! :-)

There's 2 of us, we cook from scratch most nights, and have freezer delight maybe once or twice a week and we spend about £80 a fortnight. Normally about £60 on a online grocery order and then £20 buying bits and bobs we need fresh. So £80 a week should be easy.
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.

You might find http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/ good for ideas of cheaper meals you could do.

Have you got a Lidl or Aldi near you? Worth a look....

  • Unfortunately I just don't have the time to shop around too much, but I shop for a family of 5, (kids 3,6 and 9). I reckon I spend about £100 per week including toiletries and laundry, and I would say we eat healthily and well. I never feel we are going without.

My top tip is to buy on the offers - obviously only the things you would want anyway. Our meal plans tend to vary with what's on offer and if I see a BOGOF on something I use regularly I'll buy up 6 or 8 items and store it. I find I can keep with the premium brands at the same price as the value by doing this.

We have a number of clubcards (me, other half, father in law, credit card) so this increases the offers we get. Rotate the card you use and you tend to get some good tickets out of the till. I got £13 of £90 last week. Also doing Mail Rewards which gives me £5 every 3.5 weeks (father in law gets the paper anyway!).

Check out MSE for any good deals too and add to your shopping list.

I do my main shop from tescos (from a list/food plan) but my mid week top up will always be somewhere else - Co-Op or Morrisons etc, so I can check out the offers at the same time.

If there's a CooP near become a member and sign up for emails - excellent weekly offers and some good BOGOFs. This week £1 off £3 fruit and veg, £1 of £3 meat, and £1 of £3 soft drinks. Be strict with yourself and you can save a third. They often give the 5p petrol voucher without min spend as well! (seem to get better mileage from there than with Tesco petrol). Also get vouchers through twice a year to spend at CoOp.
