Genes reunited or Ancestry.co

Anyone had any experience of either of these sites? My brother and me wondered if we could have a joint subscription with any of them. We want to research our family on both sides. Because we both have other commitments, we thought he would do das family & I'll do mums. We dont liv together so wondered if we could share a subscription ie if we both use the same password. Also, is there an alternative site that is cheaper than either of these? I,m not too keen on the idea of a direct debit.

I've only got a basic membership with Ancestry.co.uk (i.e. free) but from what I can see your tree can be as big as you want - so you can have both sides of your family on the one tree.
I'm considering signing up to a monthly payment for this site - it is a bit more expensive in the long run, but I don't have a spare £70 or whatever lying around.
The other thing I'm not sure about is because I live in Scotland, I think yu can't access the Scotland Census records - you have to use a different organisation for that.Everybody dies, but not everyone truly lives0 -
You can get 6 month's free Premium membership with Ancestry if you buy the Family Tree Maker Platinum using Tesco clubcard points. It costs £19 in points at the moment, and although the blurb on the page says you get 6 months Essentials I can verify that the Platinum comes with Premium membership - I've bought this twice in the last year. You need to enter credit card details when you register your free 6 months but it's really easy to cancel; they send you an email a couple of weeks before you're due to renew so you don't forget. Then once you cancel, just buy anothr Family Tree Maker and activate your next 6 months. The Premium membership is brilliant, you can access all the UK databases. If you accumulate Tescos vouchers this is a cheap way of researching your family tree.

Strictly speaking the account is for one user but I've shared my login details with my sister for the last 4 years and nobody's noticed0 -
Be sure if you decide to go for Genes reunited what the charges are for any census,BMD look ups.
There is loads free online Free BMD for England and Wales BMDs from 1837 to well into the 20th century, Free Reg patchy coverage of parish records ( vital before 1837) Free cen patchy cover of census returns 1841/1901 Familysearch.org the Mormons website. Then there are message boards free like Rootschat.com.
Having said all of this I am assuming your research would be in England or Wales. Scotland and Ireland need different sites. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
Hi, I agree about buying the tree maker. I bought the program very cheap on Amazon, Its the way to go.
As for choice I would go for Ancestry as most of the trees are public and I prefer the search . However Ancestry doesn't have much detail on 1911 census so I use both programs. To be honest Genes can give different results when searching and that can be useful .
As for sharing I find that on Ancestry you can invite people as ( I think its called) editor and they can work on the tree.

By the way Ancestry can cover other countries if your tree leads you there.
