I find that bread gets eaten by the starlings, blackbirds, sparrows, collared doves.
Fatballs by the tits and finches.
Apples by the blackbirds.
Seeds by all of the above and a lovely little grey warbler that seems to have taken refuge here.
Iout out all the uneaten crusts from the kids, apple cores snd peel, cheese odds and ends, fatballs and seeds.WW Start Weight 18/04/12 = 19st 11lbsWeight today = 17st 6.5lbsLoss to date 32.5lbs!!!0 -
I put out fat balls (hangs her head in shame bought ones but 6 for £1) and peanuts.
But I seem to get horrible starlings most of the time. But I have bushes with lots of orange berries on it. And the blackbirds and pigeons and doves love them and gorge themselves on them instead.
I would leave water out but don't have a suitable container and I have to be careful as there are lots of cats around and I would hate to think that they would come and catch some of my birdies.

Since Christmas the birds seem to have rediscovered my garden.Have got goldfinches, bluetits, great tits,long-tailed tits(sweet),wrens, loads of robins, collared doves, wood pigeons, all the usual suspects.
Goldfinches actually eating the special finch seed I've put out, unfortunately none of them like the shredded wheat-type cereal I bought, only to find that it was 'unsuitable for nut allergy sufferers'-might try mixing it with fat.0 -
although i like watching the birds, my next door neighbours go mad feeding them. In september i noticed a big nest of rats had made a nest in my garden.
easy access to food next door, and very little disturbance from humans as we very rarely used the garden.
could i ask if you feed them and you find rats - please let your neighbours know. Ours didn't tell us that the rat catcher had been to there house plus those of neighbours they were friendly with.
The rats can be dangerous if cornered. I'm just grateful we spotted them.
Now i have two 5 month old kittens who love the garden, i don't think i'll have the rat problem again, and i can still enjoy watching the birds next door.0 -
Just a reminder to everyone all crumbs or stale bread neadn't be thrown away or turned into bread pudding. October 28th is Feed the Birds Day, which marks when we should start helping the feathered visitors to our gardens

I do hope EVERY day is a feed the birds day
Apparently we're being asked to feed them in summer too now. But thanks for the heads up.

This year for the first time I have fed the birds for the whole year, and have been amazed by how much they ate through the summer.0

I only seem to get sh*tehawks (pidgeons) in my back garden and I wont encourage them as they poo all over my windows and bench!

I'm afraid to encourage the birds coming to my garden as I have a cat. She has a bell on her collar, but I'd hate the birds to get caught, so I don't put any food out. Any ideas on feeding them safely?:beer:0
