Just getting a snackbox ready for tomorrow

Would the birds eat oven chips left over from lunch?

What about ropey clementines left over from Christmas?

Today we have put out pork bones for the starlings, popcorn, I make porridge twice a day for the birds and the chickens, as well there is bird seed, maize and chicken pellets put out in huge amounts (currently about twice the normal amount).

Am going to clear out the dried fruit and nuts cupboard and see what I can put out for them. We are very lucky because we have a huge variety of wild birds, mistle thrush, blackbirds, every type of tit you can think of, wagtails, tree sparrows and house sparrows and 3 robins. Mr K thinks I am mad but I like to see the birds in the summer so try to keep them going through the winter  water is changed 3-4 times a day to stop it from freezing as the pond is frozen solid (in fact the pump is still going and has formed an ice hole - I keep expecting a seal to appear any moment :rotfl:)

I was given to packets when I went into the co-op the other week but if I try to grow anything it tends to die:rolleyes:

Not teaching you how to suck eggs honest :o, but the RSPB tell you not to put cooked porridge out, as it can cause the birds beaks to stick together and so they are then unable to eat, dry porridge oats are fine, hope you don't mind me saying :o:o
  • Ive been putting out any leftovers & scraps I encounter after feeding dog and chickens - cooked pasta, rice and potaotes go down well, weetabix in milk, apples, raisens, peanuts, porridge, a bit of bread, bacon rind and chicken scraps, left over peas and sweetcorn.

Although the redwings are unusual for us we do get a great variety of birds that come to our garden, sparrows, starlings, blue tits, great tits, robins, chaffinches pied wagtails and dunnocks visit every day.
We also see jackdaws, long tailed tits, blackcaps, goldfinches, greenfinches, bullfinches, woodpeckers, grey wagtails, song thrushes, to name a few.
In the summer we have mallards that come to the back door and quack for some food. They live on a stream at the bottom of our lane. Can't you just tell I love my feathered friends.

I put the rind from the end of the blue cheese today with other bits of bread with some dripping melted on it. It was minging, but the birds seemed happy enough.

  • I have a stale bag of cocopops hiding in our cupboard. Would these be okay to put out for the birdies? Would hate to put something out that could hurt them

'No certainly not. It contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs, cats and birds. '
