hi full time mum, this is probably a silly question but when you say coconut you mean a real coconut not dried coconut don't you? Dried is a complete no-no for birds because it swells up in their stomachs so much, it can kill them

When I say coconut, I mean half a coconut shell (which came from B & Q already filled with seed cake)

  • Off to make seed cake now I know I can use the veggie suet.

Well, its done now. Mixture of currants, chopped nuts, oatmeal, bit of ground almonds, small amount of grated cheese all held together with veggie suet and packed into the coconut shell.

Whether the birds like it or not is another matter - will let you know.

  • The food is gradually going down but I've only seen one robin on one occaision so I can't report back on who is eating it.....

The blackbirds are going crazy for the rotting apples that fell from our trees

  • I would just put the fruit and nuts out and not worry about making "cake"

If you soak the dried fruit in water for a few hours first that is best - than the birds will not eat loads, which will then swell up in their stomachs!

Thankyou for that, the house sparrows that come into our garden are eating through bird seed really fast, so we'll need to buy some more soon.
