buying council house

hi me and my boyfriend are moving in together i live in a council house and can buy it with a 35% discount.
Putting our debt together it is around £20,000:eek: this includes car loans, credit cards etc.
We are trying to reduce our debt and wondered if buying the house and getting an extra 20,000 on top of the mortgage was possible?
we have visited a mortgage adviser and they have said it is possible although we are limited to who would provide the mortgage.
Is this true ?? i don't want us to get our hopes up that we could be living together and only have a mortgage to worry about to then have our hopes smashed by the wrong advice.
P's once / if we get a mortgage our cc and loan are going we wont be making that mistake again.:o

i have recently purchased a council property and i got my mortgage with the halifax and was able to get a 100% mortgage as im on a low income but cause of the discount the property is still worth more than the mortgage, i didnt borrow any extra so dont know about that but know halifax do a hundred percent for council property, hope this helps a bit.now proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0

I think you should look at this from a different angle - e.g. how best to clear your debts, rather than how best to add them to your mortgage.
Can I suggest you post your situation on the Debt Free Wannabe board? I can almost guarantee that you'll be advised of lower-risk ways of clearing your existing debt without connecting it with a mortgage.
