Wedding abroad - problem with birth certificate

Hi all,

Not sure if I am putting this in the right place so sorry if I haven't.

My partner and I have just booked our wedding for October next year abroad as it is so much cheaper yet so much nicer. We have got it all booked and the deposit paid but we have hit a problem.

The travel agent had a look at our birth certificates saying we needed the full version to take with us which is fine as we both have this. However, mine does not have my fathers name on as it is unknown. I didn't tell the travel agent this as I feel it was a bit of a private thing to discuss with them but she has said I need to get my fathers name put on to be sure everything will be okay when we get over there.

As I said, he is unknown. My dad who has been around since I was 2 is my dad as far as I'm concerned but obviously not my legal father so we can't put his details down as it is false information. What can I do? Has anyone else ever hit this problem and is there a way around it?

Thanks

Panicking bride to be :(

i would say go to the manager in the travel agents
i dont think its true- hopefully someone else has had experience of this

Thanks for that Sammy, that's exactly what I thought too!! When I registered my little boy and his dad was there with us at the time then even told me I had no obligation to list his name and he was sitting there with me!!

But as for my dad, I simply don't know.

Am getting married in Cuba. It just says in laws for Cuba and getting married you need your birth certificate but nothing about it having to have all the fathers details on too. To be honest it could have Tom, !!!!!! or Harry's name on and how would they know that was my dad....

Hopefully someone will know but like you say will probably go back to the manager of the travel agents. x

I think your travel agent is talking utter BS to be honest and I'd be putting a complaint in asap about it. Who your father is, or is not, is irrelevant to her and will NOT impeed your marriage providing you have correct documents.

I'd be really incensed at her even suggesting you get it 'sorted it out', perhaps she needs to get her facts straight before she tries to sell something she clearly knows nothing about.

Please also make sure you are very familiar with any translations/visa's etc that you may need before going, (especially important if it is not the first marriage for either of you).

Ps Have fun, I stayed at the Luna Y Mares in Guardalavaca two years ago and it was amazing, the Cubans are amazing people :j

Very happily married on 10th April 2013 :D

Aww thanks for that, will have a read up. It is our first marriage for both of us so should be pretty straight forward, until I hit this problem. Hopefully is a load of trollop though then I can relax again :D x
  • Having just got married abroad and requiring every certificate going, birth, marriage, death, divorce, adoptive (i kid you not between us we had them all) there was no problems with my birth certificate which has a space for my fathers details. I only had the shortened version when I faxed the details accross and was just asked for a full one. They even gave me the phone number to call to order one!! We took the originals with us, they checked them and it was all fine.
Hope you have a fabulous time x

Thanks for that and congratulations :T
  • Well after all the confusion with what the travel agent told me and me worrying, I emailed both the Cuban embassy and emailed the hotel direct.

Both have now replied - Cuban embassy states the birth certificates are not legally required at all in their country to be married so long as both parties are single, never been divorced or widowed and are not adopted or have changed their name at any point. They just said some hotels require the birth certificate for their own records.

I have also had a reply from the hotel from the wedding co-ordinator there who has stated that the fathers name being completed does not affect anything, it is just basically a copy they take for their records.

So after all that worry, the travel agent told me utter nonsense.

Can start getting excited now though :j
