    1. How many hours/how much can she earn without effecting her benefits?

You can claim Income Support if you work less than 16 hours a week. But Jobcentre Plus will take into account some of the amount you earn when they assess your claim for benefit. The amount they ignore will depend on your circumstances.

    2. Does she have to inform HB/IS etc?
Yes and in particular she has to inform the Revenue. If IS is her only (or main) source of income, then it's unlikely she'll hit the tax threshold but they do need to know.

Do Avon charge a set up fee?

I believe they charge £15 over 2 installments of £7.50.

As for which is better, I'd suggest that depends on your friend's circumstances and tastes and what there is available in her area. There are plenty of companies offer similar packages, Wikaniko, Partylite, Betterware, Kleeneze, Jamie Oliver and Usborne books to name but a few. Please note I've never worked for any of them and am not recommending or criticizing them.

Personally, however, if your friend's goal is just to earn cash for Christmas, I'd suggest she try to get a part-time job even if only for a few hours a week and/or get sorted out with the internet, which will increase her options. Businesses of any sort generally take time to build up and I'm not sure 3 months will be enough time to generate any sort of meaningful money via Avon or its ilk.
  • If she has young children then presumably she knows other people will children of a similar age in which case Usborne books might be worth looking into.

You can't really do Avon without a computer, as the orders go through oline. I only done it for 3 campaigns. It cost me more than I was making and other reps were nicking the rounds.
