Cleaning self cleaning oven

Just moved in to new place and the oven is digusting beyond belief - there are stalagmites of hard cooked grease hanging from the heating elements and the self cleaning walls are covered in a solid black mass.
Any ideas on how to clean it without destroying the self cleaning mechanism?

My partner's cooker was like this when he moved into his house - I cleaned everything but refused to touch the cooker as it was so disgusting!!
We used a professional oven cleaning company who made it look like new.

Hi alanrowell,
This thread from the Old Style board might help: what's the best way to clean my oven

Sorry, but usually you have to set the oven to a particular temperature to enable the self cleaning to start (very high for a longish period) or you may have to use a different switch or lever to set the process going. I apologise if I am teaching you to suck eggs but just a thought.Middlers0
