Thanks Dunston and James, I really appreciate your replies. Got an IFA recommended through a friend, hope that all goes well.
I like your suggestion James, I'll definitely ask the new guy about it. I am hoping he can give us some more general planning advice, and look at the bigger picture for the two of us. The only caveat is that we bought a shared ownership house so I'd love to eliminate the 'rent' we pay on the half we don't own, so that in itself is a big incentive to overpay.

There's an easy start and a completely safe one if you're not already using it. 8% from the First Direct regular saver account for up to £300 a month for a year. That should beat most current mortgage rates even after tax.0
