2nd opinion from a dentist / dental implants?

Hi I've just been advised that I may need to have dental implants put in to replace a couple of old root canal fillings which both have long-term abcesses - which flared up recently. Yuk I know.
Where / how do I get a second opinion before I decide what to do?
Has anyone reading this had dental implants?
Good or bad?
Cost?
The treatment...
Thanks

I have a friend who has had dental implants, he finds them wonderful for the most part and you cannot tell them from the real teeth.
Only one problem - some he has had for 25 years have just fallen out, posts et al, and he can't have new ones fitted for a year, will have to wear dentures in the meantime.
Sorry, no idea about the cost, except that it is VERY expensive, as for the treatment, maybe a dentist will come on and let you know! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
You have to have the right quality and quantity of bone, you have to have immaculate oral hygiene and no gum disease because implants can fall out due to gum disease just as easily or easier than your own teeth.
It helps if you are a non smoker as the rate of failure us much higher in smokers and many implantologists will refuse to do them in smokers because of this. People who clench or grind their teeth also have a high risk of failure too.
The whole process takes quite a few stages and months. How long may depend on if you have infections underneath your rootfilled teeth and how bad they are. You will normally have to wear a part denture during the healing phase.
They are approx £2000 per tooth although bone grafts etc can affect the price.
The best place for a second opinion is to ask friends and family for good private dentists in your area, although obviously you will have to pay for assessment.0
