Protecting my address from my daughter

My daughter who no longer lives with us has run a substantial debt on several student loan accounts and credit cards. (Around £15K at 20 years old). She seems to think that getting more credit is the answer to her problems and will not discuss this matter with us.
I am now concerned that she is using my address to apply for even more credit, and that she is putting my excellent credit rating and almost zero borrowing at risk.
Is it possible to block her from borrowing using my address?

Regards,
Jim Short

  • Not sure how you can prevent this happening, but you can check if it has already happened by requesting a copy of your credit score.

    Checkmyfile.com

    Experian's website

Checkmyfile claim to do all three agencies, but experian reports only on itself (obviously).

If you've had a problem because the agency has included information about a person in your home with whom you have no financial connection (i.e. no joint loan or mortgage etc.), you can write to the agency to disassociate yourself from that person.

Also make sure your daughter is taken off the electoral roll - I say this purlely because my sister has been having trouble getting credit and found that it was due to the fact she didnt fill in the form to place herself on the electoral roll!

IMHO your family relations are sour if your daughter is refusing/too embrrassed to explain why she is in debt and how she is going to deal with it, so she shouldn't be using your address at all.

If any letters come for her at your address write on them return to "Sender Not Known At This Address". Some financial institutions will freeze accounts if it clear that the person doesn't live at the address they are claiming to live at.

Alternatively you can open her post and then sent a two lined letter of explanation simply stating that [name of daughter] is using your address without your permission and doesn't live there. It's illegal to open other people's letters however if you do it to avoid potential creditors who could harass you in chasing your daughter up, it will be easy to argue reasonableness in any court of law.

I use a relations address and so do some of my friends i.e. parents or older siblings, however it is standard to ask their permission simply because:
    1. That is not where you live anymore or you never did
    2. If you get a debt or an alleged debt the collection agency/bailiffs could end up harassing the occupants of the house

Two people I know parents' refused permission for them to use their address even though they were not in debt.

You don't need to inform her that you are sending her letters back, you just need to say if asked that anyone who isn't a permanent occupant of the house should not have letters sent to your address. This may seem cruel but when this has happened to me by a bank I use to be with it was a blessing as they refused to update their database with my new address and only by my relative sending my mail back did they do this. (This was a few years ago.)
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Open another persons post deplorable ,and that will certainly sour relations ,also it is illegal and against site rules to encourage others to break the law.The OP should be attempting to build bridges not break them down .Other posts have given explanations and solutions ,also it appears that it is not a great worry ,therefore please refrain from implanting deplorable ideas in others minds.
