Mortgage Lending criteria - Santander

My partner and I applied for mortgage with Santander a few weeks ago which was approved and the mortgage offer released. The purchase process of our property was all going through very well until the environmental search revealed that there was (probably many many years ago) a landfill site near to the property. Santander have sat on this query for 3 weeks now and we were due to exchange contracts last Friday! We have telephoned Santander every single day now for the past 9 days but nobody is helpful at all and they just said "it is with head office and being dealt with". Does anybody know for a fact that, if for example there was a landfill site there many years ago, because there certainly is not now, will Santander refuse to lend the money? I'm confused and frustrated!!
