help- blonde hair disaster

i have naturally light blonde hair which has dulled a bit with age (tho non and bottle-blondes always say its still light!)
Ive never dyed it but i often by "blonde" shampoos in a bit to lighten it up, best thing is usually a bit of sunshine ...which has been seriously lacking this year so I fell for the marketing hype of the new John Frieda "go blonde" spray which uses the heat of your hairdryer to activate it.
Didnt realise it had peroxide in it (silly me thought that stuff like that would be kept with the hair dyes not the shampoos) and it made my blonde go a yellow-y colour. Ive stopped using it but now feel like, as well as yellow hair, if i pull my hair back into a pony, i have darker roots...albeit they are still blonde roots, im frightened ive "ruined" my hair...or its colour at least.
Any suggestions? I thought about askin a hairdresser to put some fine highlights through it to blend the "root" bit and the yellow-niss, thinking that it would have the effect that you would get when the hairdressers mix different shades of blonde through someones hair.
Or ive contemplated an all over at home "light" blonde colour but im scared it'll go yellow again
any other options? Ive tried a clarifying shampoo and ive got some silver shampoo to try but whilst that might tone down the yellow, its not gonna help with the roots

  • Im a natural blond, but very very ash. I normally lighten it to a more even shade but find the roots quickly appear darker than they are due to the contrast.

I use the silver shampoo as an intense treatment - put it in dry and leave for about an hour - it balances out any yellowness in the dyed parts and tones it down nicely. I found using it as a shampoo didnt work as well. Best thing is if it doesnt work or you leave it on too long and end up a grey/purple a couple of normal shampoo's sorts it out.

Another alternative is superdrug's own wash in wash out in cool blonde. its about a pound (not online) and you can get 2 or 3 uses out of it. works great as a toner, clears out any yellow/orange tones nicely.

  • if you are going to use a home colour id recommend garnier belle colour as its the only hair dye (and ive tried lots) that has never gone an unatural colour, it never give yellow/orange tones, i use light ash blonde, umm the only other thing i can think of is to use blonde wash in wash out like the person above suggested, it might even the colour out or salons will have stripping treatment that can strip the colour away, good luck with it
  • That John Frieda stuff should come with a warning!! There used to be a product called "Sun-in" which was EXACTLY the same as this John Frieda one and I used it and had exactly the same result as OP describes - brassy yellow tones and roots. I found the only thing which helped was to get a bespoke toner - you can get herbal blonde toners in hairdressing wholesalers and here:
http://www.prohairandbeauty.co.uk/products.asp?cat=7990- they do different blonde shades which are not permanent and which wash out after about 10 washes, but they do take out all of the brassiness and sort out the root too. I used a mixture of intoxicating ivory and beautiful beige and it sorted it out. Whatever you do don't be tempted to put a box blonde colour on your hair as they always go yellow and brassy.

  • Ah, brassy Sun-In hair. I remember that!!!

If I remember rightly, the suggestions were to use a lilacy rinse - I think the grey hair treatments contain this to stop them looking quite so yellow, if they started discolouring to the extent of going a bit greeny, to treat with a ketchup hair pack, and to see a professional to sort it out so that the regrowth isn't so bad

These days, I just dye the brassy bits purple or electric blue, so I won't be the best influence anyway!

  • Try washing your hair in ketchup. I might help reduce the brassiness.

  • Oh god I used this and it made my roots totally orange - I ended up getting highlights much quicker than I usually do (about 6 weeks rather than 8) just to get rid of the orangeness. A silver/purple shampoo might help. I use Pro:Voke.
  • I used this spray and had highlights put in last night - my hair has snapped off at the roots at the bits that were highlighted!

Don't use the spray and if you are going to get highlights put in - make sure the hairdresser knows what they're doing!
