Civil Service Career Break

On the terms and conditions of career breaks in my staff handbook, it states that on a career break you are not allowed to have employment elsewhere.
I was thinking of doing an internship in Australia for 12 months, would this be allowed as it is not in the same country?
Surely this must be the case because most people who go backpacking etc need jobs throughout their time travelling due to costs etc..

Probably better off asking PPPA (or whatever your equivalent is)?0

I used to work for DVLA and I requested a 4 month career break so I could go and do Camp America and travel. Mine was granted and no-one ever questioned about me getting paid whilst I was off (although I was paid a minimal amount!). This was in 2008.
In your case I would personally be tempted to say you want one purely to travel and then not mention that you are considering working out there, it's highly unlikely they will find out! I was not contacted at all on my career break by my employers.
I know of several people who have taken longer career breaks to raise children who are all working part-time or self employed too!
Good luck!

I am in NI and our policy clearly states you can work outside of the country, work for yourself or study while on a career break xx0

I don't know where you work but its very rare for Civil service to allow Career breaks any more for anyone other than new mums or for carers, in fact in DWP they are now called carer Breaks"You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

I agree, with DWP you'll be very lucky to get a break at the moment because it's "all hands on deck" right now. So hopefully it's another department you work for where there's no restrictions placed on you for the period of the break.
Certainly with DWP, just because it says things in the Staff Code means nothing now. Flexible working, part time, part year, special leave with or without pay, career breaks, wages & pensions ... what they promise you and what you get are SO different now I reckon DWP are effectively in breach of contract with so many of their employees.
If only PCS got some nuts and took them on properly instead of faffing about with one day strikes. Anyway, that's another thread. Good luck with your career break request !0 -

I work for the public sector and we are allowed a maximum 12 month career break for 'personal development which includes travelling abroad. If travelling abroad you are allowed to work and support yourself. However you generally can't work on career breaks and they can't be used to try starting your own business.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0
