Halves & thirds Rule

hi
i wonder if someone can give me some advise, i have recently returned a car under the halves & thirds rule, having paid 75% of the value of finance.
Following this i received a letter from the company that i returned it too, stating that i owed them money due to the car not being returned with fair wear and tear.
I was told when i spoke to someone at the company that as long as the car was road worthy and legal then there was no problem with returning it.
The car is nearly 8 years old and they are requesting that i pay for the alloys to be repaired at £55.00 each and a tiny trolley dent, which they state will cost £300.00.
This in my opinion with the age of the car is not unfair wear and tear, if i was to refuse to pay the charges and state that i am willing to go to court on the basis that it was fair wear and tear would this affect me in the future, they have sent me a letter stating that they will take this further if i dont pay.
