Southeast Water Debt

Hi
back in april 2008 i sold my house and moved to my present property. I notified all utilities. Recently i have discovered that water bills in my name are still being sent to the old address. Also legal procceding notices as nothing has been paid. The people i sold the house to have obviously never set up an account or paid anything. I have managed to prove to Southeast water that i sold the property in april 2008 and they have agreed to close that account back to april 2008 as they can see i set up a new account in my new house at the same time. But they also say the amount left outstanding is £300. Now i am sure i was up to date when i left that property. I have requested bills or a breakdown from them. How can i prove that i do not owe them money? Can they charge me this after all this time? As far as i am concerned when i moved i did everything correctly but they seem to have cocked up/new owners did`nt notify them. My account in my new home has always been paid on the dot.
Any advice much appreciated.
