Interview advice

Hi
I have an interview tomorrow and not sure how to come across positive when asked why I want to leave my current job.

Basically my current job is a fixed term contract and I hate it. The people are unfriendly (don't even lunch with you, let alone talk to you throughout the day and when you try to include yourself in a conversation they look at you as if to say who asked you), the work itself, it's a mat cover role and the person who covering for had already been on mat leave for a couple of months before I joined (someone else did the role and had a handover but left it pretty quick) and no one knows what she did so I just end up doing photocopying, binding, the filing which has been left for months because no one could be bothered and spreadsheets.

I spoke to an agency yesterday who told me that they often get feedback from people saying how much they dislike working for the company (wish I'd been told that before I accepted it!)
So basically how would I be best to answer the question? If anyone has any good pointers I would appreciate it.

I go to pot at interviews, having temped for so long I have done many and they dont' get any easier and I am desperate to get out of this job. (I'm tempted to just had in notice and hope there are plenty of temp roles)

Thanks in advance.

Is the interview for a permanent job?

If so it's simple, you say you're on a fixed term contract, and although it isn't finishing quite yet, you want some more stability.
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard
  • Slagging off your old job or ex-workmates is a No No. Instead focus on stuff like job in-stability, under-utilisation of your skills, long commute/ distance, looking for a job which has more responsibility etc.
  • To be able to advise would really need to know more details, your current role is FTC but is the new one also temp/ FTC or Perm?

    Plenty to chose from:

1 - if going perm then its about security
2 - if you havent been there too long then its the role isnt what you had expected
3 - if you havent much left of your contract then its about your concern for the current job market and not wanting to run the risk of current contract expiring without a new job to go to

As it's only maternity cover surely the only answer you need give is that it's a fixed term temp job and that's why you are looking for a new position?
Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

  • Thanks everyone, I was just concerned that they would look and think you can't stick at anything because looking so soon.
I think I will just go with the wanting stability thing as I think if I say the job isn't what I expected they may say well what if we offer you this job and you think the same thing - which they would have a point.
