Energy salesmen used to tell me any old nonsense, even after I informed them I worked for Energywatch:rotfl: (2001- 2008) Only one backed off. The company names will not be mentioned to protect the innocent of course!‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ David Lynch.

"...they gave a nice spiel about having the best tariffs and no lock-in clauses..."
Perhaps the article point about the "lie" was about "MSE backing" but it includes the quote above which in fact is quite possibly "true", but...
In fact a NPower tariff may (or may not) feature Early Termination Charges but (commonly) NPower tariffs feature "deferred discount". This is a particularly pernicious form of "lock-in" unprotected by Ofgem or Consumer Focus. If by "best tariffs" the article means that more often or not NPower appears at the top of the comparison table then that is unfortunately "true". The "deferred discount" virtually guarantees it.
Beware "deferred discount" tariffs if you do not understand the circumstances in which the "deferred discount" will be forfeited.
Commonly tariffs from NPower and Atlantic feature "deferred discount".0 -

I am now 66 years of age and for a short time in 2001worked for what was at the time a Gas/Electric company selling ethically. We had no bonus just a liveable basic. I was shocked at the cases I discovered where people had been conned, including one vulnerable lady with altzheimers who had 4 salemen visit from different companies in 6 weeks and each one persuaded her to change, pocketing a bonus. I stopped the job afer a couple of months as I couldn't stand it any longer. Last year a salesman from a Southern ............. company called on me, thinking I imagine that I was a silly old fool, and told me that his company now had exclusive rights to Gas and Electric in the area, and if I didn't sign up there and then I would be cut off at the end of the month. When he refused to write it down I told him I would make a citizens arrest and get the police to charge him with attempting to obtain a pecuniary advantege by deception. He then unfortunately ran away. If you are conned call the Police.0

I've had "gentlemen" from this company call on me, and try to literally bully me into changing to their company. Scared the life out of me, as I'm disabled, and other than clobbering them with my walking sticks, not terribly well able to defend myself (these looked a right couple of bruisers).
I've since had an entry phone installed, so if I get an unknown caller, I just pick up the receiver in the lounge and tell them "no, thank you" without having to go to the door at all.
We have a "no cold callers" sign up, but it doesn't seem to stop them calling anyway.:(If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0
